Road Trip

Filed under: Life, Travel — Esther @ 11:25 pm

Recently I’ve been thinking about all my friends who live in the Pacific Northwest (specifically Eugene, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver) and how I have yet to visit any place north of the Bay Area. That’s right folks, I have never been to Oregon, Washington or British Columbia (or Montana or Idaho for that matter). I think I need to remedy this. I mean, I keep hearing how beautiful and wonderful these places are, so I think it’s high time for me to visit.

I’ve decided that come the beginning of 2008, I will make a road trip up north so I can visit a ton of different places in the Pacific Northwest and all of my amazing friends who live there. I’m thinking right now that I want to take about two weeks to do this. I hope that’s enough time…

So, my question is, who’s with me? Who wants to go on a road trip, eh? Also, for all of my friends that live in the places I have mentioned above, would you mind housing a koala bear for a couple of days? I swear I am super easy to live with! :-D

“Be the Change! Share the Story!” School Video Contest

About a week ago, I came across this new contest for students across the US and Canada called “Be the Change! Share the Story!” School Video Contest.

Quantum Shift TV has invited students from grades one through twelve to work on a social or environmental project of their choice and document it in two videos that they will upload to the web. The first video (which introduces the project) is due by December 15th, 2007 and the second video (which explains the project’s excursion and results) is due March 31st, 2008. The contest also incorporates puzzles that the students must complete and judging is based on viewer ratings, number of views on the videos and the completed puzzles. There are a bunch of nifty prizes including a grand prize of $50,000.00 for the winning students’ school.

I think this contest is a great idea. It’s a way to get students more involved within their local communities and it helps students to be more creative and explore new media outlets.

Remembering 9/11

Filed under: Life — Esther @ 2:05 pm

I woke up this morning and realized what day it was. I can still remember 9/11/01 as if it were yesterday. I was in my dorm room sleeping when I heard my phone ring at about 6:30am. I remember thinking to myself, “Who the hell would be calling me at this hour?!” When I picked up, my friend Becks (who was across the country at Smith College in MA) was frantically talking about planes and bombs. I had no idea what was going on. Disbelief turned into shock which turned into fear. I couldn’t get a hold of my parents in Boston (apparently all lines were down). I couldn’t get a hold of my sister in upstate New York or any of my other family members or friends in NYC. It was horrible. I still can’t believe my school held classes that day. I, of course, couldn’t peel my eyes away from the television for one second so I didn’t attend. I will never forget what happened that day.

To this day, I’m still nervous as all hell when I know I have to fly.

What about you? What were you doing on 9/11/01 when the first plane hit? Do you remember everything that happened that day? I would like to hear your stories if you care to share them.

Mmmm…Sushi…

Filed under: Life, Food, Sushi, Restaurants — Esther @ 11:00 am

If you know me at all, you know that sushi is my favorite type of food. I can’t get enough of it! In fact, I usually have sushi at least once a week (if not more). There are some amazing sushi places here in Los Angeles. I’ve been to the Crème de la Crème of sushi restaurants and I’ve also been to the tiny whole-in-the-wall-I-can’t-believe-I’m-eating-here ones. It would be too difficult for me to pick my favorite place, but I can tell you about a really good, fairly inexpensive place near UCLA that is great fun. It’s called It Zushi. Everyone who works there is friendly and knowledgeable and can give excellent recommendations for people who are undecided on what they want to eat. It Zushi also has a $0.99 sake special which is perfect for larger groups of people (or people who want to throw back a couple of sake bombs :-P ). I always order sushi and sashimi when I go out to sushi restaurants, and I can wholeheartedly say that the fish quality at It Zushi is excellent. Their fish is extremely fresh and it’s even better than the fish I’ve had at some well-known “fancy” places (if you can believe that). If you are a fan of spicy dishes, you have to try their Spicy Dream #1 or their spicy salmon rolls. I also recommend getting the bento boxes because they are inexpensive and carry a lot of food.

The last time I went it It Zushi, I brought along some friends and we had a wonderful time. Here are some photos to prove it!

Here’s Lil’ Ebwie enjoying her green tea.

So, if you ever find yourself in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and are looking for a nice Japanese restaurant, I say, go to It Zushi! I am sure you will enjoy it just as much as I have! :-)
